What are dental implants?

Dental implants are replacement teeth that fit comfortably in the bone of your jaw where a tooth used to be.

An implant is technically the titanium post that serves as the root of the false tooth. The implant supports a restoration such as a dental crown or bridge.

Once they are restored, implants look and feel just like natural teeth.

At Lotus Dental Clinic, our trained implant dentists place implants in a quick, painless and non-invasive procedure.

Types of dental implants/treatment options

A single tooth implant consists of one implant post, an abutment that connects the post and restoration, and a dental crown.

Single dental implants are popular tooth replacements—at Lotus Dental Clinic we have placed over 11,000 implants to date.

If you need to fill in a gap in your smile left by a missing tooth, then a single implant is an excellent solution. It will add strength to your bite, maintain the alignment of your other teeth and keep your smile looking its very best.

Do you need to replace more than one tooth? We have a multiple-tooth dental implant solution that can complete your smile.

If you are missing two or more neighbouring teeth, then you may qualify to receive an implant bridge. Much like a traditional dental bridge, this implant restoration consists of multiple dental restoration units. Instead of relying on neighbouring teeth, however, the restoration will be primarily supported by one or more implant posts.

Are you tired of wearing a denture that wobbles and slips out of place?

Dentures put constant pressure on the bone in your jaw and cause it to break down. Over time, your denture becomes looser and your smile becomes shorter. You can create a more stable bite with your denture by attaching it to denture implant clips.

Here at Lotus Dental Clinic, we can provide you with dental implants designed to clip onto your denture. Just two tiny implants can make a world of difference in your smile. Not only will dental implants help hold your denture in place, but they will also prevent bone loss and help you maintain a youthful-looking smile for many years to come.

An alternative to traditional dentures, the All-on-4 treatment is a multi-implant permanent solution for total tooth loss.

If you are missing all the teeth on the lower or upper half of your mouth, then you can get an entire arch of false teeth permanently attached to your mouth via four strategically placed dental implants.

The All-on-4 is ideal for individuals with limited bone for dental implants. Instead of having multiple surgical procedures to graft new bone into the jaw prior to placing implants, the All-on-4 enables the skilled implant dentists at Lotus Clinic to make the most of the existing bone tissue.

Unlike regular dentures, All-on-4 teeth can only be removed by a dentist. Once your new teeth are secured to your implants, they will function just like your natural teeth.

Are you interested in rebuilding your smile with dental implants? Instead of getting an implant for each tooth, you may qualify to have your teeth replaced with the All-on-4 implant restoration. We can even complete this procedure in one day, including the extraction of remaining teeth.

See our page on Teeth in a Day to learn more about this process.

Mini implants

Mini implants are just like regular dental implants, with the exception of being smaller in size. Smaller implants are well-suited to parts of the mouth that may not have enough bone to support a traditional implant. Although the dental implant treatment at Lotus Clinic is already non-invasive, mini implants are even more conservative.

Clip-on denture

Are you tired of wearing a denture that wobbles and slips out of place?

All-on-4 fixed solution

An alternative to traditional dentures, the All-on-4 treatment is a multi-implant permanent solution for total tooth loss. If you are missing all the teeth on the lower or upper half of your mouth, then you can get an entire arch of false teeth permanently attached to your mouth via four strategically placed dental implants.

Free initial consultation

We will welcome you to our practice to evaluate your candidacy for dental implants. This consultation takes just a few minutes and will include X-rays and a 3D CBCT scan, which shows us the amount and quality of the bone in your jaw. From this, we will be able to let you know right away whether you are ready for dental implants. We will explain your treatment plan and schedule your appointment.

If you would like to learn more before booking a consultation, we can set you up with a free remote video consultation.

Dental implant restoration

In the last step of your treatment, we will place a beautiful restoration on top of your dental implant. This restoration may be a single crown or a full bridge of All-on-4 teeth. In some procedures such as Teeth in a Day, we can place the restoration immediately after placing your implant. In other cases, we may recommend waiting to allow your implant to heal before restoring it.

Dental implant placement

In a single procedure, your Lotus Clinic dentist will carefully place one or more implants per your treatment plan. The computer-guided surgery is non-invasive and quick, so you will not even need sutures.

Your implant will be placed under local anaesthesia, so you will experience no discomfort. If necessary, we can also provide you with some mild sedation to ease anxiety during your treatment.

Placing your dental implant

Here is what to expect from your dental implant treatment at Lotus Dental Clinic:

What are ‘fully guided implants’?

At Lotus Dental Clinic, we place dental implants using a computer-guided technique. With this method, we will take a CT scan of your teeth and then use it to create a digital model. We will then virtually manipulate this rendering to plan your dental implant surgery with the utmost accuracy to ensure we place your implant in an area with plenty of supporting bone.

Once your implant dentist calculates the ideal angulation and depth of your implant with the computer-aided program, this information is transferred to a stent, or guide. This 3D-printed guide fits snugly over your teeth and directs your implant into optimal position. There’s no need to make a cut in your gums beforehand. The implant is quickly inserted in one safe procedure.

The benefits of the computer-guided implant technique include:

  • Less treatment time
  • No surgical incisions
  • No sutures
  • Improved accuracy (in comparison with the traditional freehand technique) to avoid damaging nerves and other anatomical structures
  • Faster healing

Our Principal Dentist Dr. Frankl has over 40 years of experience placing dental implants. In the accompanying video, he explains the steps he will take to plan your dental implant treatment.

I can certainly recommend Lotus dental clinic, I am a genuine patient and I give them 4.9 stars out of 5.

I required extensive work on EVERY TOOTH, X-rays, gum treatment, bone grafting, sedation, extractions, implants the lot.

The treatment options AND costs were explained fully in advance. We spent several thousand pounds on the treatment plan and they did the work over a NINE month period and the outcome is FIRST CLASS.

The clinic is clean and the team are highly skilled. They each have specialised skills and they combine them BRILLIANTLY to provide an all round excellent service.

I was worried about having the work done but they took that into consideration and guided me through.

Sometimes the car park was full but there is ample parking available outside and in the surrounding streets. Also it was NOT the cheapest quote I received. However dental procedures can be horrendous if they go wrong so I was more than happy to pay for EXPERTISE and it was the right decision.

For us it was a GOOD experience with absolutely EXCELLENT RESULTS.

Dental implants: the healing process

Rest is essential to the healing portion of your dental implant treatment.

You will need to rest both your body and your teeth. You cannot use your dental implant right away as it needs to heal before it is strong enough to bear weight.

We will advise you to avoid brushing or flossing around the implant site for two or more days to avoid disturbing the implant. However, oral hygiene is still important, so we recommend that you continue to keep your other teeth clean. Gently rinsing your mouth with a warm saltwater solution will help soothe and cleanse your implant site.

The technology and implant techniques we use at Lotus Dental Clinic promote rapid healing after implant placement. Even so, we will provide you with personalised instructions to ensure that your implant heals as quickly as possible.

Are implants right for everyone?

As long as you have a missing tooth or teeth that need extraction, then you are already an excellent candidate for dental implants.

Although getting implants placed is a minimally invasive process, implants require plenty of healthy bone tissue in order to integrate with the mouth. Dental implants may not be advisable in some cases where the gums or bone are compromised.

For example, a Lotus Clinic dentist may recommend an alternative treatment if you:

  • Have received radiation therapy to your jaw
  • Have untreated gum disease
  • Have uncontrolled diabetes

Common questions about dental implants

Is there an age limit for getting dental implants?

There is no age limit to get dental implants. The important factor, rather, is your health. If your health allows you to have teeth extracted, then you can have treatment for dental implants. Dental implants may not be recommended if you have serious health problems such as uncontrolled diabetes or gum disease. As long as you are healthy and want to build a stronger and more beautiful smile, then you are an excellent candidate for dental implants.

Are dental implants safe?

Dental implants are one of the most predictably successful treatments in dentistry with a success rate of 95%. The treatment is made safe by utilising the latest dental implant technology to perform minimally invasive and pain-free surgery.

Dental implants are made from a biocompatible material called titanium, which is a very safe material used in many other kinds of surgical prosthesis.

Why should I replace a missing tooth with a dental implant?

That gap in your smile is more than an eyesore; it also has the potential to cause serious problems for the health of your other teeth. An empty space can allow the surrounding teeth to shift out of healthy alignment and tip over or crowd together. Poorly aligned teeth are at risk of decay, gum disease and uneven enamel wear.

You can maintain your tooth alignment by replacing a missing tooth with a dental bridge or a dental implant. Your dentist will examine your smile during your free initial consultation and let you know whether an implant is the right tooth replacement option for you.

What are implant teeth made of?

A dental implant is a post made from a metal called titanium. This post is placed snugly into the bone of your jaw and is not visible once it is covered by a restoration. The top part of the post that sits above the gums can be topped with a porcelain crown or bridge, or it may support a denture or full arch of All-on-4 teeth.

How do I clean my dental implants?

You can clean around a dental implant the same as you would a natural tooth. Brush your implant with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste at the same time you brush your other teeth. Floss around it gently, taking care to not pull hard on the gums around your implant.

If you have an implant bridge, you may need to use a special floss or a water flosser to clean underneath.

Your dental team will demonstrate ways to safely clean around an implant bridge or a full arch of All-on-4 implant teeth.

Schedule regular professional dental cleanings to ensure that your implants stay clean and healthy.

How long will my dental implants last?

If you take good care of your dental implants and your overall health, then these restorations can last you longer than 15 years. Dental implants even have the potential to stay with you for the rest of your life. They will not decay or break down or fall out as long as your gums are healthy and you take care to avoid damaging them while playing sports.

Can I get dental implants if I smoke?

Yes, even individuals who smoke can enjoy successful implant treatment. We do recommend that you avoid smoking during the crucial healing phase after dental implant surgery, as smoking can interfere with healthy blood circulation
